The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies in every Australian postcode and is the foundation of any 2026 battery rebate plan. It's worth roughly $3,300 off a 10 kWh battery in most states, or up to $4,200 in NT (Zone 1).
On top of the federal rebate, four jurisdictions have active state-level battery stacks: NSW (PDRS VPP top-up up to $1,500), WA (Residential Battery Scheme up to $5,000 Synergy or $7,500 Horizon Power), and ACT (Sustainable Household Scheme interest-free loan up to $15,000).
Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, and Northern Territory are federal-only as of mid-2026. Their previous state schemes (Solar Victoria battery loan, SA Home Battery Scheme, QLD Battery Booster, NT Home and Business Battery Scheme) have all closed or hit funding caps.
Here's exactly how each stack works, with side-by-side comparison and worked $0-upfront examples.

NSW: federal + PDRS VPP up to $4,800
NSW is the second-most generous state for battery rebates after WA. The NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) VPP incentive stacks with the federal rebate for up to $1,500 additional savings on a 10 kWh battery.
VPP enrolment is required for the state portion. Common participating retailers include Origin Loop, AGL VPP, and Energy Locals.

WA: federal + RBS up to $5,000 or $7,500
WA is the most generous state in the country for battery rebates. The WA Residential Battery Scheme stacks with the federal rebate for up to $5,000 combined for Synergy customers, or up to $7,500 combined for Horizon Power customers, on the first 10 kWh of usable capacity.
The 100,000-system allocation cap is the biggest urgency lever in the country. Once it closes, the state piece ends.

ACT: federal + $15,000 interest-free loan
The ACT Sustainable Household Scheme isn't strictly a rebate. It's an interest-free loan up to $15,000 over 10 years that stacks on top of the federal rebate to cover the post-rebate cost of the install. Most ACT households end up cash-flow-positive from month one because the bill savings exceed the loan repayment.

Federal-only states (VIC, SA, QLD, TAS, NT)
Victoria: Battery Rebate VIC 2026. Solar Victoria battery loan closed May 2025. Federal only.
South Australia: Battery Rebate SA 2026. Home Battery Scheme closed September 2022. Federal only, but strong retailer competition and SA's high retail prices make payback fastest of any federal-only state.
Queensland: Battery Rebate QLD 2026. Battery Booster closed when federal launched. QLD is STC Zone 2, so per-kWh federal rebate is larger than other federal-only states.
Tasmania: Battery Rebate TAS 2026. No state battery rebate. New retailer entry (Solstice, CovaU, 1st Energy) in 2025 transformed FiT economics.
Northern Territory: Battery Rebate NT 2026. State scheme funding cap reached. NT is STC Zone 1, so federal rebate is largest in the country, but shipping and cyclone hardware add costs.
Worked $0-upfront examples
Four examples, one for each major stack pattern. All assume a 10 kWh battery added to an existing 6.6 kW solar system.
1. Sydney (NSW, federal + PDRS): List $12,000 minus $3,300 federal minus $1,100 PDRS = $7,600 net. Bill savings $1,200/year. Payback 6 years.
2. Perth Synergy customer (WA, federal + RBS Synergy): List $12,500 minus $3,300 federal minus $1,700 RBS = $7,500 net. Bill savings $1,200/year. Payback 6 years.
3. Karratha Horizon Power customer (WA, federal + RBS Horizon): List $13,200 minus $3,300 federal minus $4,200 RBS = $5,700 net. Bill savings $1,300/year. Payback 4.5 years, fastest of any combination in the country.
4. Canberra (ACT, federal + SHS loan): List $12,500 minus $3,300 federal = $9,200 financed via SHS at 0% interest over 10 years. Monthly repayment $77, monthly bill savings $90 to $130. Cash-flow-positive from month one.
